Stephen Kelly is a photographer living and working in Ticino, Switzerland. In his most recent series Crest, set in a remote and enclosed Alpine valley nestled on the Swiss-Italian border, geography and biography bind together to explore landscape and identity. Swiss author Max Frisch described the Onsernone valley as ‘a place outside of everything’. Isolated and surrounded by steep mountains, it was left behind by those who were able to leave to follow the gold rush in Australia and the Americas and toiled over by those who remained. Crest touches on traces of this past in the harsh steep land, while exploring intricacies of a more contemporary life, as well as reflecting on my personal connection with the valley. Family ties, a passing of time and a state of solitude combine deep within the high mountain walls to create a portrait of a secluded landscape and a search for my own place.
