I am a Gyotaku printer and metal worker with an interest in the natural world. The mystery of what lies beneath an expanse of water has always fascinated me. I have spent countless hours day and night from kayak and shoreline exploring the rugged Atlantic and Irish sea. These explorations into the vast unknown of the sea and the potential dangers that go with it have left me with memories and experiences I will never forget. In my work I aim to capture the essence of the fish I catch that instils a true sense of life in the subject. From the printing of these fish to piercing and forming them in metal, each process reflects the act of fishing itself. Making these magnificent underwater creatures by hand takes a great deal of persistence and patience much like fishing, while not knowing what the outcome of the finished piece will be. It is important that the direct contact between the fish and paper is never lost through the making process, I want the viewer to be in awe of these fish and their presence along with the techniques and time it took to make them.
