As a concept driven textile designer my work is often an interpretation and response to the world around me. Specialising in surface pattern I am naturally drawn to texture, colour, and pattern. I explore these through digital and screen print.I use my sketchbooks to document the journey my work takes. I tend to abstract individual elements from my chosen subject and use these as the stimulus for my work. Collage, exploring texture and experimenting with colour palettes have all helped me develop my own way of working and be freer in my expression. This process has also allowed me to develop an illustrative style, so my work fluctuates between contemporary pattern designs and representational illustrations. My final collection is based around my bond with my grandmother and particularly focuses on the importance of storytelling, family traditions and the significance of one's home. I have done this by generating conversational patterns to communicate and preserve this narrative throughout, all while paying homage to my grandmother and the key elements of her life. I utilize colour and surface pattern for its ability to connect us on an emotional level. I have taken a utilitarian approach with this collection meaning it can be translated onto a variety of surfaces, particularly within the home.
