Declan Coyle Is a Derry based Artist and final year MFA student at Belfast School of Art. He graduated in 2019 with a BA hons degree in Jewellery and Silversmithing, but more recently has focus and primary area of inquiry has become Performance Art. Through the MFA he’s examined Performance Art with an in-depth analysis of performance to camera, video installation and live performance. His practice engages with multiply themes exploring place, people, and identity with an emphasis on experience, memories and shared or hidden histories which can reveal underlying themes. His reliance on language, words, speech, sounds, and gesture is evident in his recorded performances and in the street performances he participates in. Text has an important role to play in his work and recently he has been utilising scripted responses from the performer. His work is influenced by Artists such as Samuel Beckett, Vito Acconci, Carolee Sheemann and Stuart Brisley among others. His latest works endeavour to engage the viewer with an exploration of the voice, language, and words in a video format. Using scripted performances focusing on the words and expressive language to draw the viewer into the scene, using inconstant narratives in a poetic format to engage the viewer and continually shift and redefine the narrative.
